The famous Kenyan writer Ngugi wa Thiong'o in his book “Decolonizing the mind” (1986) states that the European colonization of Africa “was effected through the sword and the bullet. Abubakar said that as part of decolonising the minds of East Africans, Lake Victoria should be renamed Lake Jumuiya and the new name would symbolise the new spirit of unity in the region. Ngugi Wa Thiongo's “Decolonising the Mind” holds true in the present day as well where we have failed to carve out our own subjectivity that would be perfectly divested of the Western thought of conduct and behaviour. Armed with just one copy of his book, I told him about how “Decolonising The Mind” launched my interest in African literature and how I thought “Petals of Blood” was still relevant today.
